At the outset, The Orthopedic Center’s project appeared straightforward – install and insulate new piping, and replace fixtures. It was a renovation project that held both practical and cosmetic goals, aimed at enhancing the medical office’s functionality and aesthetics. Yet, much like a skilled doctor delving into the depths of a patient’s symptoms, Lee Company began its meticulous investigation.

As the camera traversed the plumbing system, an astonishing discovery was made – the sewer was flowing backward. What seemed like a routine upgrade quickly escalated into a critical undertaking. The consequences of such an oversight could have been disastrous for both The Orthopedic Center and the hospital it was housed within. Lee Company’s keen eye and diligent work had averted a potential catastrophe, setting the stage for a series of pivotal decisions.

As the extent of the plumbing issue became evident, the team presented its case and proposed remedies to The Orthopedic Center’s owners and plumbing engineer. In collaboration with the general contractor, The Orthopedic Center’s owners, and plumbing engineer, Lee Company mapped out a plan to address the issue. With the green light secured, the team embarked on a journey to not only renovate the plumbing but to rectify the underlying problem that had gone unnoticed for years.

A Journey Underground: Reworking the Plumbing System

The renovation of The Orthopedic Center’s plumbing extended far beyond surface-level upgrades. The Lee Company team delved deep into the building’s infrastructure, embarking on a meticulous process to redesign and rework the plumbing system. This included the demolition of the flawed system, redesigning the sanitary sewer, and reworking domestic water, sanitary waste, and vent piping.

Multiple shut-downs were executed over weekends, enabling the installation of the new sanitary sewer and final ties outside the building.

In a testament to the team’s dedication, The Orthopedic Center’s owners expressed their gratitude by providing pizza to the team on a Saturday – a simple yet heartfelt gesture of appreciation.

With the project commencing in May 2022 and concluding in December of the same year, Lee Company accomplished the renovation in a mere seven months.

The decision to fabricate plumbing systems in the field, rather than relying on prefabrication, demonstrated Lee Company’s adaptability and commitment to efficiency. This approach contributed to the project’s seamless execution and timely completion.
